The weather at Jerez turned miserable on the final day of the Moto2 test there, bringing the action to a premature end at the Andalucian circuit. Only the few riders brave enough to venture out early managed a few dry laps, the rain arriving shortly after noon.

The shortness of available track time did not hamper reigning 125cc World Champion Marc Marquez. The young Spaniard managed just six laps before the rain came on Friday, but he still managed to improve his time, getting down to 1'45.2, just half a second off the official lap record set by Toni Elias back in May, in much more favorable conditions. Both Julian Simon and Xavi Fores also got a quick run out, Simon managing a 1'44.8 in just 10 laps, while former Spanish CEV Moto2 rider Fores set a 1'45.9.

In the MotoGP class, Karel Abraham made use of the wet conditions to get familiar with the bike in the rain, putting in an impressive 38 laps on board the Ducati Desmosedici GP11. With MotoGP testing so limited, Abraham simply had to make the best of the extra testing days he is allowed as a MotoGP rookie for the 2011 season, and riding in the rain was a better option than not riding at all for the Cardion AB rider.

We couldn't help but be impressed by the Green GT Le Mans Prototype-style racer when it first surfaced back in the Spring of 2009. It was just as awe-inspiring when its drivetrain found its way beneath the very sexy bodywork of the Citroën Survolt. Now, with none less than the president of the FIA Jean Todt on hand, the team behind the green machine has just revealed a new updated version.

The difference between this one and the original? Amongst the many upgrades - including a much-improved paint scheme - is more power. The twin rear-mounted motors can now kick out a peak 408 horsepower (300 kW) which they calculate can push the car past 180 miles per hour (290 km/h). That's a 50 percent improvement. Besides offering straight line speed, software-controlled torque vectoring should help it wend its way around the bends with less fuss.

The energy storage system also received a lot of attention. It now holds 31 kilowatt-hours within a more powerful, liquid-cooled battery that sits in a flameproof, crash-absorbing enclosure made from aerospace composites and equipped with a fire-suppression system. While we don't expect to see this one-of-a-kind prototype in serious competition any time soon, it could easily serve as the blueprint for future track attackers.

Just because the overall mood in the advanced automotive technology field has shifted pretty much into a plug-in vehicle direction doesn't mean that hydrogen fuel cells are dead and buried. Even in a place as tailor-made for electric vehicles as Hawai'i, the fight for H2 continues.

Today, GM and The Gas Company announced that ten organizations have joined the Hawaii Hydrogen Initiative (H2I), a plan to get around two dozen H2 stations installed on O'ahu by 2015. The deal was first announced in May. The ten new partners are: the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT); U.S. Department of Energy; FuelCell Energy; Aloha Petroleum Ltd; Louis Berger Group; U.S. Pacific Command, supported by the U.S. Pacific Fleet, U.S. Pacific Air Forces, U.S. Army Pacific, and U.S. Marine Forces, Pacific; National Renewable Energy Laboratory; the County of Hawaii; University of California - Irvine, and the University of Hawaii. So, government, education, military and a petroleum company.

On the one hand, since the state imports every drop of oil it uses, anything that helps reduce the load is a good thing. Also, given O'ahu's small size, a small number of stations could easily support the 10,000 fuel cell vehicles that The Gas Company says it could easily supply with H2 today. Of course, Oahu's small size also means it's perfect for electric vehicles.

This announcement doesn't mean that EV advocates are quietly exiting the state. Nope. Coda Automotive is supposedly going to try to sell vehicles there, as is Better Place. (In 2008, Phoenix declared it would sell cars there in 2009, but that never happened.) On December 30th, local plug-in fans will be hosting an electric car rally - and they hope President Obama and his family will come by during their winter vacation in the islands. He's mad at outgoing governor Linda Lingle and the $10 million she "wasted on the hydrogen economy."

Dual-clutch transmissions are the current Holy Grail when it comes to transferring horsepower from underhood to the wheels of the car. Nearly every automaker that does serious business around the world offers dual-clutchers, and the ones that don't very likely soon will.

It's easy to understand the draw of the DCTs: better performance and greater efficiency. But there are also problems. For instance, two clutch mechanisms mean (theoretically, of course) twice the potential cost of repair, and DCTs generally cost more than either standard manual transmissions or conventional automatics with torque converters.

Xtrac, a company firmly entrenched in transmissions for racing applications, has developed a new technology called Instantaneous Gearchange System that uses a ratcheting mechanism to couple the gear hubs with the main shaft. The system has been under development for two years and has reportedly seen racing duty by multiple motorsports teams.

Apparently, the IGS technology will be less expensive than other dual-clutch transmissions and could potentially be adopted by various global automakers. Hat tip to David!

MotoGP Back On British Eurosport For 2011

Good news for MotoGP fans in the UK, and everyone else capable of receiving Eurosport (such as via the Eurosport player). Everybody's favorite (English-language) MotoGP commentary team will be back in action for 2011. For British Eurosport has once again struck a deal to cover MotoGP, featuring the dulcet tones of Toby Moody and Julian Ryder, along with expert technical analysis by Neil Spalding.

British Eurosport will cover all 18 rounds of the 2011 MotoGP season, with the 125 and Moto2 races being shown live, and the MotoGP races delayed by one hour, a concession to the BBC, who have also have a contract to air the MotoGP races, one considerably larger than the Eurosport deal. So British viewers will be able to watch the action twice: once in full, on the BBC, and an hour later, revisit the whole thing with commentary from Moody and Rider.

What do you call a gullwing without the gullwing doors? A roadster, of course, and according to the latest reports, that's precisely what Mercedes-Benz has in store for us at the Frankfurt Motor Show next year.

The reports stem from an interview given by AMG boss Ola Kallenius in Auto Motor und Sport, outlining what the Silver Star performance studio has in the pipeline. Among them is the long-anticipated convertible version of the Benz SLS AMG supercar, which will come as a welcome improvement for many.

The upward lifting doors on the SLS coupe may be the car's party piece, but not everyone has fallen in love with them - the roadster will offer the same retrotastic styling and the same 560-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 engine, plus the wind-in-your-hair factor and sans the showy portals.

A prototype of the SLS droptop has just been spotted undergoing winter testing, and this is the first time we can recall seeing the canvas roof unadorned by camouflage, giving us a better look at what the finished car will look like. Check out out in our high-res gallery below.

Tesla Motors, the Silicon Valley automaker that produces the electric Roadster and has inked deals with Daimler and Toyota, has finally worked its way past a long trademark dispute in Europe. The electric automaker's application for the "Tesla" name in the European Union had been blocked by Tesla Holding a.s., a 90-year-old company that supplies communications and broadcast equipment in the Czech Republic.

Tesla Motors resolved the dispute by filing an amended trademark application with the EU's Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market. The Czech firm, which had filed opposition to Tesla Motors' application for the trademarked name back in 2007, has apparently withdrawn its complaints and will allow the automaker to register under Tesla Motors. With the dispute resolved, Tesla Motors can focus its attention towards future vehicles like the Model S without worrying of possibly having to rebrand its product lineup.

The rain that had been hanging over the World Superbike test for the first two days finally came on the third and final day. But the factory Yamaha and Aprilia squads were still lucky, with the rain only starting to fall late on Thursday morning at Phillip Island, before disappearing again in the afternoon, giving the riders a couple more dry sessions at the Australian circuitl. It was Eugene Laverty who made best use of the session, putting on a set of soft tires to set the fastest time, with a lap of 1'31.5. The Yamaha rider finished ahead of Max Biaggi, once again the fastest of the two factory Aprilia riders, while Laverty's teammate Marco Melandri matched the pace of Aprilia's Leon Camier,

The rain did not go to waste, however. Marco Melandri took the opportunity to get some time on the Pirelli rain tires, having no experience on the Italian rubber, after having spent his career in the Grand Prix paddock racing Dunlops, Michelins and Bridgestones. His teammate Laverty was the only rider to test the softer tires, the two Aprilia riders using the harder race tires.

More Tests Lost To The Weather: WSBK At A Wet Portimao, Moto2 At A Freezing Barcelona

Reports of testing are starting to sound increasingly like a broken record, with weather being a constant factor preventing the teams from testing properly. The second day of testing for a small group of World Superbike riders at Portimao turned into another washout, with heavy rain and cold temperatures wracking the Portuguese coast.

Despite that, the teams present went out and tested anyway, focusing instead on setup and working on known issues. At the end of the day, it was Ruben Xaus who got his name atop the timesheets on his very first outing on the Ten Kate Honda, finishing three tenths of a second ahead of BMW new boy Leon Haslam, and over a second ahead of his Ten Kate teammate Johnny Rea. Alstare Suzuki's Michel Fabrizio matched the pace of Rea, who was a couple of tenths quicker than BMW's Troy Corser. Two former factory riders on new machines - James Toseland on a BMW and Noriyuki Haga on an Aprilia - propped up the bottom of the timesheets, though the conditions leave the times being set devoid of meaning.

Now that Winter has arrived at the doorstep of the Northern hemisphere, it's time to put the ice and snow that's already in full effect in the French Alps to good use. That's right, the sophomore Trophée Andros Electrique season starts up this weekend with the first event being held at Val Thorens. As you might imagine, last year's winner, Nicolas Prost, has stated his intention to retain his title. If he pulls it off, he'll likely receive the trophy at the Stade de France. The series has a high profile finish planned for the French national stadium.

While the Andros car is still in its 800 kg (1764 lb) Evo 2 form, with a 90 Kw (122 horsepower) Siemens motor and Saft lithium batteries, the field has been increased to twelve machines. Exagon Engineering, the builders of the snow-spewing buggies, still seem to have added weight to the adage that racing improves the breed. The company displayed the very sexy, very electric Furtive-eGT at this year's Paris Motor Show. We can only imagine there is some amount of cross-pollination between the two programs. Warsaw's metro system is going green in 2012. That's when the city will introduce new subway cars, dubbed the Siemens Inspiro, that will be 97.5 percent recyclable. Not only that, but the system will also be more energy efficient. The "weight optimized chassis" will be built out of aluminum, making these cars much lighter than the city's regular rail cars and reducing energy consumption.

The Polish capital commissioned BMW Designworks USA and Siemens to design the eco-friendly public transit system. The team came up with a well-designed and attractive yet functional rail car. The entrances are extra wide for maximizing passenger flow. Railway maps will be displayed on large screens and thought has even been given to the lighting in the spacious cabins. As a nod to its eco-friendliness, the designers made the handholds look like tree branches. This is a fitting touch since Warsaw Metro was recognized with the "Special Merit Award for Commitment to the Environment" at the MetroRail 2009 Conference in London. Perhaps, with the Siemens Inspiro, Warsaw Metro can set its eyes on the "Most Energy Efficient Metro" award and maybe even snag a title for "Best Passenger Experience."

Hemi. The mere mention of the word is enough to strike fear into the hearts of lesser powerplants... or at least images of a pair of scrubby-looking bottom-feeders that really love themselves some Ram Trucks. In any case, we're keenly interested in the latest Hemi engine from the Dodge Boys, in this case displacing a heady 392 (or so) cubic inches and placed gently inside the engine bay of the 2011 Challenger SRT8.

Not only is this new Hemi larger than the already oversized version it replaces, it's also considerably more potent. The Pentastar says that its new 392 kicks out 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque - substantial improvements over the outgoing SRT8's 425 hp/420 lb-ft. But those are factory ratings, and we all know those don't necessarily match what's actually under the hood of production models.

Thankfully, the crew over at Inside Line managed to score enough time with a 2011 Challenger SRT8 to strap it down to a proper dyno. And the results? How about 452 horses at 6200 RPM and 443 lb-ft at 4400? Yep, that'll do nicely, and it means that Dodge may actually be underrating its potent performer just a tad. Oh, and for what it's worth, IL managed to record 370 horses and 343 lb-ft from its 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS on the same exact dyno. Chevy's answer ought to be coming in the form of a Z28 with over 500 supercharged ponies... Stay tuned, the horsepower wars are clearly still in full swing.

The slow-selling Honda Insight hasn't exactly stolen any of the Toyota Prius' thunder since its introduction last year, and with new green cars like the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf ready to join the battle, the future of Honda's hybrid hatch doesn't look too bright. Still, the Japanese automaker has given the Insight a host of improvements for the 2011 model year, including a new base model that retails for $18,950 (including the $750 destination charge).

So, what do you lose gain with the base Insight? For starters, a downgraded stereo system is on hand, with a single CD player and two - yes, two - speakers. Audiophiles need not apply. Remote entry is standard on the base Insight, but if you want amenities like cruise control, a USB audio interface, center armrest and floor mats, you'll need to opt for the mid-grade LX trim. In other words, the new price leader is something of a municipal and fleet special. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the pricier EX now comes standard with steering wheel-mounted audio controls and can be optioned with navigation.

The Insight's 1.3-liter inline-four with Honda's Integrated Motor Assist carries over largely unchanged, with fuel economy rated at 40/43 miles per gallon, city/highway. 2011 Insight models are arriving at Honda dealers as you read this, and for the full details on what's new, follow the jump for Honda's press release.

The Moto2 rider line-up for 2011 is slowly starting to take something resembling its final shape, with more and more riders signing contracts to ride next year. Kenan Sofuoglu's signing for the Technomag CIP squad provided one catalyst, provoking a spate of moves to secure the known quantities for next season at the Valencia test. The prime mover in that chase was the team that Sofuoglu turned down, with Gresini securing former Tech 3 rider Yuki Takahashi to take the place of the departing Moto2 champion Toni Elias, with Sofuoglu's former Ten Kate Honda World Supersport teammate Michele Pirro taking the second seat in the biggest team in Moto2.

The Tech 3 team had earlier announced the signing of Bradley Smith and Frenchman Mike di Meglio to take the place of the departing Yuki Takahashi and the disappointing Raffaele de Rosa - the Italian being tipped for a return to the 125cc class, along with Hector Faubel (signed for Bancaja Aspar), Joan Olive and Sergio Gadea. Meanwhile, the other hottest seat in Moto2 - the one left vacant by Di Meglio - has been filled by one of the two riders making the jump from the Spanish CEV Moto2 championship, Xavi Fores signing with the Mapfre Aspar team for 2011, joining his CEV Moto2 rival Kev Coghlan on the world stage.

Lorinser, an aftermarket company that specializes in extracting additional engine power and fine tuning the exterior appearance of many OEM vehicles, has turned its attention towards retrofitting the Smart Fortwo with a plug-in, through-the-road hybrid setup that makes the diminutive city car an even more fuel-efficient runner - with some all-electric capability.

Lorinser wheeled out its Easybrid-equipped Fortwo at the Essen Motor Show, but the company's hybrid system is not designed solely for use on Smart models. In fact, Lorinser claims that virtually any small vehicle equipped with rear drum brakes is suitable for the electric hub motor retrofit and envisions vehicles like the Volkswagen Polo, Renault Twingo and Fiat 500 as candidates for its hybrid setup.

Lorinser describes the benefits and functionality of the Easybrid package like this:

Easybrid improves acceleration and final speed outputs. At the same time, the [fuel] consumption and CO2 levels drop. [Since] electric engines are very powerful and their maximum torque is reached after one revolution, it is also possible to move these cars solely on electric power. With this retrofit solution, Lorinser... allows the driver to choose his operational mode. Apart from the combination of both engines, he can also opt for either the sole electronic or sole combustion engine.
In order to recharge the lithium ion batteries, which for space saving measures are either stored in the reserve wheel drop or under the vehicle, the automobile can either be connected to a usual socket or use the so-called recuperation during its operation. The car can run approximately 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) on electric power and, depending on the model, more than 500 km (311 miles) in combined hybrid mode.

The aftermarket firm has been testing the Easybrid plug-in hybrid system since May of 2009 and will continue to do so until mid-2011. The company hopes to ready it all for a public launch date late next year. Hat tip to Philippe!

Charging an electric vehicle (EV) is about as simple as, well, filling your tank up with gas or diesel. What flows into the vehicle is completely different, but plugging in is a straightforward process that will remind drivers of filling up at the gas pump. Whether charging via a Level 1 cord inserted in a wall socket in your garage or by plugging into a mobile fast-charging unit, the process is much the same.

Case in point: Real Power demonstrated its truck-mounted mobile charging unit during the press days at the 2010 LA Auto Show. The truck is equipped with a 60 kW generator and an Eaton Level 3, 440-volt DC Quick Charger. To demonstrate the ease of charging, BNET's Jim Motavalli pulled up in a Mitsubishi i-MiEV and plugged in. Even with 440 volts flowing, the process is simple and, most importantly, safe.
